Abstract

The #EndSARS movement in Nigeria brought to the fore decades of unresolved issues relating to police brutality, human rights abuses, and the absence of effective legal remedies. This article explores the historical and legal context of police misconduct in Nigeria, critically examines the role and actions of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), and evaluates the legal remedies available to victims of police brutality. Through an in-depth analysis of the #EndSARS protests of 2020, the paper highlights the gaps in Nigeria’s legal and institutional framework and offers recommendations for comprehensive police reform and human rights protection.
